The extra interest
On top of the base rates, the Government pays extra interest on your first balances to boost retirement savings:

Extra interest is added on top of the base rates. Source: CPF Board.
- Below 55: an extra 1% a year on the first S$60,000 of your combined balances — of which the OA portion counted is capped at S$20,000. This lifts the effective return to as much as 5%.
- 55 and above: an extra 2% on the first S$30,000 and an extra 1% on the next S$30,000 of combined balances — up to 6% in total.
Why this matters
These rates are the benchmark every other “safe” option is measured against.
